Current and Past National Focal Points

In pursuit of AFREPREN/FWD’s key objective of strengthening local research capacity and harnessing it in the service of energy policy making and planning, national focal points were established in the following 10 AFREPREN/FWD member countries: Botswana, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The key role of the focal points is organizing national policy seminars with the primary objectives of:

• Disseminating AFREPREN/FWD research findings

• Garnering the energy policy research priorities of key stakeholders in the respective national energy sectors.

Target group

The number of participants invited to the national policy seminars  ranges between 20 and 25. The target group includes the following key stakeholders in the energy sector:  

•  Representatives of central Government agencies, namely, Ministry of Energy,  Ministry of Finance, Agriculture, Environment, Trade and Industry.

•   Senior decision makers such as members of parliament.

•   Energy regulatory agencies.

•   Local authorities. 

•   National electricity utilities.

•   Independent Power Producers.  

•   Rural and urban energy institutions

•   Financial institutions involved in energy sector investment.

•   Small credit institutions that target low income rural and urban enterprises.

•   Representatives of informal sector enterprises. 

•   Associations of manufacturers.

•   Private and public sector institutions interested in the provision of modern energy
